My project is scheduled for public release next summer, and I plan to create a new type of experimental musical stage play. This work is not just a conventional play, musical, or drama; it is more like a deep fusion of contemporary art and performance. The inspiration for this creation stems from my observations and reflections during my time in China. I have noticed that the stage play environment in China is still relatively conservative, and many audiences are not very receptive to emerging creative forms. On one hand, they often find the content difficult to understand or hard to accept, while on the other, the presentation forms are not engaging enough or stimulating enough to capture the audience’s senses, resulting in a lack of involvement and emotional resonance.
In my previous works and experiments, I have been constantly exploring effective ways to convey themes and emotions through different media. Whether it was film, photography, or combining music and color, I have been seeking a way to stimulate the audience’s senses to the maximum extent. My goal is to engage the audience through these different dimensions and strengthen their immersive experience. However, I do not want the work to be overly abstract, as excessive abstraction could hinder the audience’s understanding and emotional connection with the piece. Therefore, through repeated attempts and explorations, I gradually realized that I need a form of expression that can both ignite the audience’s imagination while also ensuring they do not feel exhausted by it.
Through this line of thinking, I decided to create a new experimental type of musical. Rather than calling it a traditional play or musical, it is more of an innovative form that transcends the boundaries of art. It combines installation art, performance art, and scriptwriting, breaking the traditional framework of stage plays. I don’t want it to be restricted by conventional presentation methods. Instead, I hope it can provide the audience with a new sensory experience within the context of contemporary art. In this work, I plan to incorporate film and photography, blending them into the scene and stage design, creating a unique expressive language. Through this approach, two different timelines will be presented simultaneously on stage, allowing the narrative to no longer be confined to a single timeline, breaking free from the traditional linear narrative framework.
Additionally, I want to extend the emotional narrative outside of the stage, into another dimension. I will use the images and photos displayed on stage to guide the audience into a completely new space. In this space, the audience will not only be watching a performance on stage but will also have their thoughts and senses directed to a broader level, breaking the boundaries of time and space. The uniqueness of this expression lies in the fact that it is not created solely within the traditional framework of stage plays. Instead, it weaves together elements from multiple dimensions, forming a holistic, multi-layered art experience.
I believe that this exploration of a new creative form is the kind of expression I have been searching for. It not only presents a story from multiple dimensions but also displays the different timelines and time dimensions within the same space. This makes the experience richer and more multifaceted. Movies will no longer be confined to cinemas, photographs will not be limited to galleries, and stages will no longer belong exclusively to drama. Through this fusion, I hope the work can break the audience's conventional understanding of traditional stage plays, allowing them to experience the intricate connections between drama, film, art, and performance from a completely new perspective.
This new creative form opens up new possibilities for art and stage performances. The audience can witness a story from different levels of expression, while the work itself can show its unique sense of time and space. This fusion and innovation not only challenge traditional art forms but also explore the future direction of stage creation. I hope that this experimental work can provide the audience with a fresh sensory experience, prompting them to think differently about artistic expression and inspiring them to connect more deeply with the culture and philosophical ideas behind the work.
Therefore, this experimental musical stage play is not just an artistic creation attempt; it is an in-depth exploration of contemporary artistic expression. Through this work, I aim to bring more possibilities to stage art and offer the audience an unforgettable artistic experience that encourages them to reconsider their understanding of art. This work is not merely a performance; it is a grand fusion of cross-disciplinary art, a challenge and combination of tradition and innovation.
In this production, the goal is to create a space where time and space are no longer confined to linearity. The blending of installation art and performance will allow multiple layers of meaning to emerge, allowing the audience to connect not only to the present moment of the performance but also to the broader cultural and temporal context in which the narrative exists. This is, in a sense, a breaking down of traditional boundaries in the theatrical world. By introducing film and photography into the stage environment, I will create an immersive experience that transcends the physical limitations of the theater and transforms it into a space where time, art, and storytelling converge in real-time.
By taking this step, I hope to bridge the gap between contemporary art and traditional performance, creating a hybrid form that attracts both traditional theatergoers and those who are more accustomed to the visual and conceptual elements of modern art. This project will be an opportunity for me to experiment with new ways of storytelling while challenging both the audience’s perceptions of theater and the very nature of performance itself.
Ultimately, the work will be a reflection of the fusion of past and present, tradition and innovation, as well as a meditation on how art can evolve to speak to the contemporary human experience. It is an exploration of how stage art can become a dynamic space for cultural exchange, providing a new way for audiences to connect to the emotional core of a story while allowing them to experience the work as a multi-dimensional artistic expression.
